I was recently looking at the “competition’s” websites as I often do to see what other departments are posting and updating. There are some really great fire department sites on Long Island. Unfortunately it dawned on me that even some of the top sites, and even in their contact areas, do not list an email address to reach.

Hard copy vs. electronic news releases and stories: two different sets of rules to follow

There is, in my estimation, a large difference in sending a hard copy press release or story to the media versus electronically transmitted news. I, like most, send releases and stories about my Department almost exclusively to the media via e-mail. Less is certainly more when a media outlet reviews your materials electronically.




A few months ago a fire took place in Smithtown, NY where I serve as the fire departments PIO. It was as routine as a small working fire could be. A heavy rainstorm caused a neon sign in the window of a nail salon to catch fire after water leaked through the plate glass seal. The fire was quickly knocked down and we headed for home.
