Rotten Apple?

I was driving to the airport a couple of hours ago after attending the Maryland State American Legion Convention in Ocean City.

Great place to hang out for a couple of days!

I was not going to post today but was listening to Fox on Sirius and heard a story about Apple holding a press conference tomorrow. Since this is a first time they are facing a negative situation in many moons, I thought I’d give you a heads up to closely follow how their PR strategy follows through. I call following these stories “recreational PR.” It’s a great sport to watch how the big guys handle a crisis.

Dodging a Question?

Meg Whitman former eBay head honcho is running for Governor of California.  She has held multiple town hall meeting around the state to promote her agenda. Obviously with such open forums tough questions arise from the audience.

At a recent town hall in Modesto, Whitman was asked a question, I can’t tell if it was from a reporter or audience member, in which she was asked – “Have you or any members of your family been arrested or run afoul of the law?”

Special Events need Backup Plans

As PIO’s most of us are expected to facilitate special events. Everyone handles their onsite checklist for a special event differently. I like to do a virtual run through two days before an event to make sure I have not missed anything and that I have a contingency for any possible problem.

Crisis Communications Review of the Austin IRS building crash and fire

austinI have taken a few days to review all the public information related quotes pertaining to the plane crash and fire in Austin, Texas.

From an Austin Fire Department perspective they did all the right things. On the fire ground their response, attack and search all followed SOP. During the initial news conference Austin Fire Chief Rhonda Mae Kerr spoke briefly, discussed the fire, thanked the Department and applauded the response of the entire unified command in the city. She turned the investigation over to the FBI.

Tiger Woods way over par at the Crisis Communications Open

woodsIn the midst of an audience that looked like they were placed there as part of a juicer infomercial, and a script that sounded like a 19 year old killer reading remarks prepared by his lawyer before a death sentence, Tiger Woods failed as both a person and convincing communicator.

More Surreal Blather surrounding the deadly Flint, Michigan townhouse fire.

LOCKFrom a PIO standpoint, I thought I would never say this, but I would rather see a total press blackout then continue to allow the blather coming out of government official’s mouths about the tragic fire in Flint, Michigan last Saturday night that took the lives of four young children.

Press Conference Tips

If your Department is involved in a major fire-rescue incident, building dedication, community relations program, awareness month, personnel matter, crisis management issue etc. a formal press conference might be in order.bishop

In other posts I will cover my take on fire ground and crisis management conferences, but today I’ll take a look at a generic press event that you might be doing, that is not fire ground related, and that you have time to prepare for.
