I was driving to the airport a couple of hours ago after attending the Maryland State American Legion Convention in Ocean City.
Great place to hang out for a couple of days!
I was not going to post today but was listening to Fox on Sirius and heard a story about Apple holding a press conference tomorrow. Since this is a first time they are facing a negative situation in many moons, I thought I’d give you a heads up to closely follow how their PR strategy follows through. I call following these stories “recreational PR.” It’s a great sport to watch how the big guys handle a crisis.
Speculation has been high that Apple needed to address a Consumer Reports report that did not recommend the just released iPhone 4 due to antenna issues; as a result the company said it will hold a press conference tomorrow.
Apple rarely holds press conferences, besides those that are tied to the launches of its products and services. The press conference will be held at the company’s Cupertino, CA headquarters at 10 A.M. Pacific Time, but company spokespeople gave little details to the media besides that.
Some techies are continuing to ask if Apple will announce a recall of the phone. Regardless, announcing a press conference, as opposed to just posting a statement by Steve Jobs, as the company has done in the past, shows the seriousness of the issue.
It will be interesting, from a PR perspective, to follow the proceedings.
